If you intend on storing items in a storage unit, and you believe you can fit them inside a small space, you still need to prepare ahead of time. Fitting items inside a small space requires a bit of skill. Here are some tips to help you get your belongings neatly situated in a small storage area.

Take An Inventory Of All Your Items

Your items may not look like a lot if they are scattered in several locations in your home. It is wise to check over the amount of belongings you need to move before you decide where you are going to store them. This way you have the option to upgrade the square footage of a rental unit if needed. Grab a ruler and measure larger items and keep a tally of the total length, width, and height of the items when they are added together. This will help to give you an idea of the amount of space you need to rent. 

Plot Out A Floor Plan Ahead Of Time

Before you head to your storage unit to place items inside, have a plan ready so you know exactly where each item is to be situated. Use your measurements along with the measurements of your storage unit to decide where you intend on placing your belongings. Draw the proposal on a piece of paper, making changes as you see fit. When you have determined how to fit your belongings inside perfectly, place the paper in a sheet protector and hang it by the entryway to your unit for easy reference.

Get A Few Tools To Help Use All Space Available

You want to maximize the number of items you can fit in your storage unit. Instead of only placing items on the floor level, use the upper space as well. Invest in a few metal or plastic shelving units to place inside your storage unit. Place these up against the walls of the unit so there is less risk of one of them tipping over. Use the shelving units to hold smaller items. Place heavier belongings on the bottom tier of a unit. Use hooks on the walls if the storage unit facility allows you to make alterations to the interior of your rented space. Wooden pallets also work well at keeping items off of the floor. Categorize your items so each pallet has similar belongings on it, making items easier to find when needed.
